Hot Shooting Eagles Knock Off No. 20 IU Southeast 92-87

WILMORE, Ky. – Four Grenadiers scored in double figures but it was not enough as Asbury University defeated No. 20 IU Southeast 92-87 on Saturday.

Jamie Johnson led IU Southeast (6-4, 1-1 RSC) with 21 points and six rebounds. Kerry Smith had 19 points, Nick Tinsley had 13 points and Lukas Burkman added 12 points and seven rebounds.

With both offenses clicking throughout the game, neither team could pull away which led to a first half with 12 ties and 12 lead changes. The Eagles (6-4, 1-1 RSC) led 46-44 at halftime. Jamie Johnson and Kerry Smith combined for 23 of the 44 points to keep IU Southeast close.

In the second half, a basket from Nick Tinsley and two made free throws from David Burton gave the Grenadiers a 58-52 lead with 15:35 to play. But the Eagles responded with a 20-7 run which gave Asbury a lead that they would not relinquish.

David Burton hit a three-pointer with 1:36 to play to cut the Eagle lead to 85-82 but Clif Conley extended the lead to six with a three-pointer of his own with 33 seconds to play to put the game out of reach.

Conley finished with a game-high 22 points for Asbury, who defeated IU Southeast for the first time since 2015.

IU Southeast hosts Midway University Tuesday at 7 p.m.
