NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Ashley Johnson scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half to send IU Southeast past Cincinnati Christian 75-60 on Thursday. With the win, the Grenadiers clinch the No. 2 seed in the RSC West and will host a RSC Quarterfinal on Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
Annie Thomas added 16 points and six steals, and Josie Hockman and Aaliyah Bell each had 12 points for IU Southeast in the contest.
The Grenadiers (18-10, 10-7 RSC) turned on the defensive pressure in the second half which helped spark the offense, which had sputtered in the first half. IU Southeast shot just 29 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and were 0-of-8 from three-point range.
Josie Hockman kept the Grenadiers in the game offensively, scoring eight of her 12 points in the first half. IU Southeast led 23-18 at the break.
In the second half, IU Southeast led by as many as seven points but a 20-10 run by CCU to close out the third gave the Eagles a 41-38 lead.
The IU Southeast offense clicked in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles 37-19. The Grenadiers scored almost as many points in the fourth quarter (37) as they did in the other three quarters combined (38).
The Grenadiers press force six turnovers in the fourth quarter alone and IU Southeast began to attack the basket as well. IU Southeast shot 54 percent from the field in the second half.
IU Southeast dominated the points off turnovers category (24-4) and almost doubled up the Eagles in the paint 40-22.
The Grenadiers travel to Brescia University Saturday to close out the regular season. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
