RICHMOND, Ind. – The No. 13 IU Southeast Grenadiers men's basketball team fell 79-75 to No. 2 IU East in the River States Conference Men's Basketball championship on Tuesday.
Joe Jackson had a career-high 32 points and added 10 rebounds and four blocks. Jamie Johnson had 20 points.
The Grenadiers (23-8) led 36-33 at halftime behind the strong play of Joe Jackson, who had 14 points and five rebounds in the first half.
IU Southeast used a 9-0 run to take a 19-10 lead halfway through the first half. The Grenadiers were able to force early turnovers to slow the Red Wolf offense. The
Grenadiers forced 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes and scored 14 points off of turnovers.
Late in the first half, IU East began to hit shots and limit turnovers. They used a 13-4 run to tie the game. Jalen McKay had 10 points in the first half.
The Grenadiers led 36-33 at halftime.
In the second half, the IU Southeast defense faltered and IU East was able to get going offensively. The IU East bench was a huge factor. Kendall Rollins scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half and Bishop Smith scored 12 of his 14 points in the final 20 minutes.
Down the stretch, IU East was able to hold off IU Southeast with a solid night at the free throw line, ( IU East was 10-of-11 in the second half) and capitalized with some easy transition baskets off of turnovers.
The Grenadiers' perimeter offense was ineffective as they shot just 3-of-15 from three-point range and were unable to spread the IU East defense.
Both teams have clinched automatic bids to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. The bracket announcement will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET.
