Grenadiers Defeat Kentucky State and Concord Tuesday

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team grinded out two more wins on Tuesday. They defeated host Kentucky State in five sets and swept Concord College to move to 6-0 on the season.

IU Southeast dropped the first two sets to the Thorobreds before rallying for the victory. The Grenadiers defeated Kentucky State 20-25,21-25,25-22,25-20,16-14. IU Southeast had chances to win the opening two sets but were outscored 9-1 to finish the first set and 8-4 in the second. The Grenadiers trailed 17-10 in the third before a 15-5 run got them back in the contest.

Monica Loftus had 12 kills to lead IU Southeast and Alyssa Cosgrove added nine. Reigning RSC Setter of the Week Hannah Sipe had 25 assists.

With the Grenadiers down 14-13 in the deciding fifth set, Cosgrove came through with two-straight kills to give IU Southeast match point. Parker Andres recorded one of her eight kills to secure the win for the Grenadiers.

In the second match of the day against Concord, IU Southeast was led by the pair of Cosgrove and Andres again. They had 11 kills apiece and just three combined attack errors. Monica Loftus added eight kills and freshmen Jennie Malone and Trinae' Love added seven each.

IU Southeast won 25-17, 25-15, 25-22.

The Grenadiers held a comfortable advantage in the first set at 18-13 and then used five consecutive points to put the set out of reach. In the second set, IU Southeast used three 4-0 runs to pull away and in the third set two kills each from Andres and Cosgrove and a Concord error extended the Grenadier lead from 12-10 to 17-11 en route to a 25-22 win.

IU Southeast hosts St. Mary-of-the-Woods Thursday at 7 p.m. on Alumni Appreciation Night.
