NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Jamie Johnson had 27 points, Kerry Smith had 15 and David Burton added 13 points but it was not enough as No. 15 IU East defeated (RV) IU Southeast 89-74 on Saturday.
Turnovers were the story in the contest as IU East forced 19 Grenadiers turnovers and outscored IU Southeast 22-13 in points off turnovers in the game.
IU Southeast (15-8, 8-4 RSC) hung right with the Red Wolves and the teams battled to six ties in the first 14 minutes of the game. IU East closed the half on a 21-10 run that was fueled by turnovers as the Grenadiers committed 12 in the first half alone.
The Grenadiers trailed 46-36 at halftime but were able to cut the deficit to 60-52 after two Johnson free throws. The Red Wolves (19-6, 11-1 RSC) answered with a quick 7-0 run.
Back-to-back three-pointers and a free throw all by David Burton cut the lead to 72-66 with 6:51 to play but IU Southeast would not get closer.
Nate Niehoff had 20 points off of the bench to lead IU East. Bishop Smith added 18 points while Aaron Thomas had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Garrett Silcott had 12 points.
The Grenadiers travel to Alice Lloyd College Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
