NEW ALBANY, Ind. – David Burton had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Glenn Hill and Tamaje Blackwell each added 17 points while Jacobi Hendricks chipped in with 10 points to lead IU Southeast past No. 16 University of the Cumberlands 77-65 on Wednesday.
The Grenadiers (1-0) opened the game on a 20-9 run. The Patriots (1-2) answered with a run of their run to cut the lead to 22-16.
But a few minutes later, Blackwell was a spark off of the bench and scored five quick points to put the lead back at a comfortable distance at 31-17.
The Grenadiers would take a 38-31 lead to halftime. David Burton had 10 points in the first half and Blackwell added nine.
In the second half the Grenadiers were able to clamp down defensively and hold the Patriots to just 17 percent shooting from behind-the-arc in the final 20 minutes which helped prevent a comeback.
The IU Southeast offense was efficient in the second half as well. They shot 59 percent from field in the second half and 59 percent for the game.
IU Southeast extended its lead to 64-44 with about nine minutes to play after a basket from Antonio Rogers. The Patriots would not get closer than 11 points for the remainder of the contest. IU Southeast was 17-of-20 from the free throw line to secure the win.
Steven Fitzgerald had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead Cumberlands.
IU Southeast hosts Miami-Middletown Sunday at noon.
