Grenadiers Defeat Brescia 70-56 Behind Woods's Career High 23 Points

NEW ALBANY, Ind.- Madi Woods set career-highs with 23 points and six steals, Natalie Fichter had 14 points and five rebounds and Ariana Sandefur had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists as IU Southeast defeated Brescia 70-56 on Thursday.

The Grenadiers (10-5, 3-1 RSC) jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter behind the hot shooting of Madi Woods, who recorded 11 of her 23 points in the first quarter on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. She also was 3-of-3 from behind-the-arc.

IU Southeast forced nine first-half turnovers and outscored the Bearcats 11-0 in points off turnovers to keep Brescia at a distance. The Grenadiers led 40-28 at halftime. Ariana Sandefur and Madi Woods combined for 23 of the Grenadiers 40 points in the first half.

Brescia (4-13, 1-3 RSC) outscored the Grenadiers 18-11 in the third quarter as the IU Southeast offense faltered. IU Southeast shot 3-of-16 from the field in the third quarter and led 51-46 heading to the fourth.

Natalie Fichter opened the quarter with a three-pointer and then got a layup off of a nice pass from Emmy Ralph to bring the lead back to a comfortable distance at 56-46. Fichter and Madi Woods combined to score 13 of the Grenadiers' 19 points in the final frame.

The Bearcats would not get closer than eight points the rest of the game and a Madi Woods jumper put the lead back to double-digits for good with 1:24 remaining.

The Grenadiers forced 19 turnovers in the contest and outscored the Bearcats 21-4 off of turnovers in the game.

IU Southeast travels to Fisk University Dec. 28.
