Grenadiers End 2018-19 Season With 63-59 Win Over CCU

Cincinnati, Ohio – Four Grenadiers scored in double figures and IU Southeast withstood a late rally from Cincinnati Christian to defeat the Eagles 63-59 on Saturday to conclude the season.

Ariana Sandefur had 17 points to lead the Grenadiers. Senior Josie Hockman had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists and Madi Woods and Baylee Krueger each had 10 points.

IU Southeast (16-14, 9-9 RSC) used a solid defensive second quarter to take a comfortable 35-27 lead into halftime. They held the Eagles to just nine second quarter points. Senior Baylee Krueger had all 10 of her points in first half in her final collegiate game.

In the second half, CCU got back in the game by forcing 13 IU Southeast turnovers which led to 18 points. They dominated the Grenadiers in the paint 16-6 and used a 16-2 run to tie the game with under six minutes to play in the contest.

But the Grenadiers did not waver and never allowed the Eagles to take the lead. A jumper by Kirstie Henn gave IU Southeast a five-point lead with just over a minute to play.

Gabby Suarez tried to give the Eagles the lead with under 10 seconds to play but missed a three-pointer and Ariana Harper grabbed the offensive rebound only to have it stolen by Sandefur who was fouled and hit both free throws to secure the win.

Midway University defeated Asbury University 69-59 to earn the RSC West No. 4 seed in the upcoming RSC Women's Basketball Championship due to their 2-0 record over IU Southeast in the regular season which eliminated IU Southeast from postseason play.
