NEW ALBANY, Ind. – After scoring only five points in the third quarter, IU Southeast overcame a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Asbury 65-60 on Saturday.
Kelsi Scott had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead IU Southeast. Lauren Lambdin and Ariana Sandefur each added 11 points.
IU Southeast (15-11, 8-6 RSC) led 34-31 at halftime but stalled offensively in the third quarter. The Grenadiers were just 2-of-14 from the field in the third and were outscored 19-5 in the period.
IU Southeast finally got their offense going again with about six minutes to play in the game. After Kelsi Scott scored, Madi Woods connected on a three-pointer. Then Ariana Sandefur converted from long range and Lauren Lambdin hit two huge three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 59-54.
Then Sandefur scored on a putback and Kelsi Scott scored off of an Asbury turnover to trim the lead to just one. On the next IU Southeast possession, Sandefur hit a three-pointer to give IU Southeast the lead with just over a minute to play.
The Grenadiers were a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to secure the win. IU Southeast was 5-of-15 from behind-the-arc in the fourth quarter after making just four three-pointers the rest of the contest. The Grenadiers outscored the Eagles 26-11 in the fourth quarter.
Lauren Lambdin and Ariana Sandefur each had eight points in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback.
Senior Josie Hockman became the 27th IU Southeast women's basketball player to record 1,000 points when she scored on a fastbreak in the third quarter. She led the Grenadiers with seven assists and added nine points in the win.
IU Southeast hosts Brescia Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
