NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Jaivaughn Jackson had 22 points and Anthony Wales Jr. added 21 points, eight rebounds and five steals as IU Southeast pulled away late to defeat the University of Rio Grande 88-78 in double overtime on Saturday.
Rio Grande (9-11, 2-4 RSC) came out strong offensively and were able to connect on high-percentage shot in the first half, shooting 15-of-24 (63 percent) from the field in the opening half.
They slowed the game down and kept IU Southeast from getting easy baskets in transition. The RedStorm closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 37-30 lead to halftime.
The Grenadiers opened the second half on a 24-7 run to take a 54-47 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.
Rio Grande closed regulation on a 18-11 run to force overtime.
In the first overtime, Rio Grande scored the first four points of the period. Then Jaivaughn Jackson took over. He scored all six points for IU Southeast in the first overtime, including a three-point play that tied the game. A three-pointer by Trey Kelley missed to force a second overtime.
The second overtime was all IU Southeast as they finally wore down the RedStorm. The Grenadiers forced six turnovers in the final overtime period and outscored Rio Grande 17-7.
Anthony Wales Jr. was the spark both offensively and defensively. He had nine of the 17 IU Southeast points and three steals in the final five minute of play.
The Grenadiers forced 30 turnovers in the contest, more than double the season average of 14 for Rio Grande. IU Southeast capitalized by scoring 28 points including seven of the 17 in the second overtime.
David Burton had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jocobi Hendricks had 11 points in the win. Rio Grande was led by Hadith Tiggs who had 23 points and 11 rebounds.
IU Southeast travels to No. 13 IU Kokomo Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
