KOKOMO, Ind. – Emmy Ralph had a career-high 17 points, Natalie Fichter had 15 points and six rebounds and Madi Woods had 14 points to lead IU Southeast past IU Kokomo on Tuesday.
The Grenadiers (12-7, 4-3 RSC) clamped down defensively and held the Cougars to 32 percent shooting from the field and just 4-of-20 shooting from three-point range.
The key was capitalizing on turnovers. IU Southeast forced 17 turnovers which led to 31 points. The Cougars forced 18 turnovers but only scored nine points off of the miscues.
The Grenadiers opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 28-18 lead. The Cougars would cut the lead to four but Fichter answered with a three-pointer to keep the lead at a comfortable distance. The Grenadiers led 41-30 at halftime.
IU Kokomo cut the lead to five late in the third quarter but a Maddie Knight basket gave the Grenadiers a 54-47 lead as they headed to the fourth quarter.
The final 10 minutes were all IU Southeast. The Grenadiers outscored the Cougars 29-17 in the final period.
The Grenadiers used a 14-5 run to put the game away. Ariana Sandefur had all nine of her points in the fourth, including two threes. The Grenadiers sealed the game by shooting 14-of-15 from the free-throw line in the final period.
IU Southeast travels to Pittsburgh next weekend to take on Carlow University and Point Park.
