PITTSBURGH – The IU Southeast men's basketball team cruised past Carlow University 85-60 and defeated Point Park University 84-64 in a weekend sweep of the Pittsburgh schools in the River States Conference.
The Grenadiers (14-6, 7-2 RSC) jumped out to a 16-4 lead over Carlow in the first seven minutes of the contest. Carlow got back in the game with a 13-4 run midway through the half, but the Grenadiers closed the half on a 27-10 run to take a 47-27 lead to halftime.
The Grenadiers shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and hit seven three-point field goals to help pull away.
In the second half Carlow did not pull within 13 points for the remainder of the game. The Grenadiers held them to just two three-point field goals made in the final half of play.
David Burton led the Grenadiers with 19 points, Anthony Wales Jr. had 18 points and eight assists and Jaivaughn Jackson added 10 points.
On Sunday, the Grenadiers trailed 35-22 in the first half before closing the period on aa 18-2 run to take a 40-37 lead at halftime.
After the sluggish start it was all IU Southeast the rest of the way. The Grenadiers outscored the Pioneers 44-27 in the second half and led by as many as 24 points.
The Grenadiers forced 21 turnovers and committed just eight in the contest and clamped down defensively on the perimeter once again, allowed the Pioneers to shoot 5-of-19 from three-point range.
David Burton led IU Southeast with a career-high 26 points and seven rebounds. Anthony Wales Jr. had 15 points, Jared Osborne had 11 and Jocobi Hendricks added 10 points.
IU Southeast travels to IU East Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
