NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Lauren Lambdin had a career-high 27 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead No. 1 seed IU Southeast past No. 4 IU East 85-73 in the quarterfinals of the River States Conference Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday.
The Grenadiers (19-11) fell behind 27-21 in the second quarter but Lambdin sparked a 17-4 run that gave the Grenadiers a 38-31 lead with just over a minute to play in the first half. Lambdin scored 13 of her 17 first-half points in the second quarter.
IU Southeast led 40-37 at halftime.
In the second half, IU Southeast kept the Red Wolves at arm's length but they had trouble pulling away. It was not until Lambdin scored with five minutes to play that IU Southeast had a double-digit lead. Madi Woods followed with a layup to extend the lead to 75-63.
IU East (10-21) cut the deficit to six points but an intentional foul was called Reagan Hune which allowed Ariana Sandefur to hit two free throws and IU Southeast still had possession. Madi Woods was fouled and hit both free throws to seal the win.
Madi Woods had 14 points, and Natalie Fichter and Ariana Sandefur each added 11 points while Hannah Coleman had 10 points and eight rebounds.
IU East stayed in the contest by shooting well from behind-the-arc. They shot 8-of-18 (44 percent) from three-point range.
IU Southeast shot 57 percent (17-of-30) from the field in the second half and outscored the Red Wolves 30-16 the paint which proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Grenadiers capitalized on turnovers, outscoring the Red Wolves 20-5.
IU Southeast will host No. 2 seed the University of Rio Grande Saturday at 1 p.m. in the RSC Semifinals.
