Grenadiers Fall To Midway In Five Sets Saturday

MIDWAY, Ky. – IU Southeast dropped a close match to Midway for the Grenadiers' first loss in 2020 14-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 15-12 on Saturday.

The freshman duo of Emilee Organ (19 kills) and Izzy Stallard (15 kills) led the way for IU Southeast in the loss. Delaney Nichols added 10 kills. IU Southeast hit .176 in their first road contest of the season.

The Grenadiers (2-1, 2-1 RSC) pulled away midway through the first set. After a service error extended the Grenadier lead to 17-11, the Grenadiers used a kill by Stallard, a kill by Nichols and an ace by Organ to take a 20-11 lead. Stallard recorded her fourth kill of the frame to give the Grenadiers set point and an attack error by the Eagles gave the Grenadiers the 25-14 win.

Midway (4-1, 2-0 RSC) jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the second set including scoring the first 10 points of the frame. The Grenadiers battled back to cut the deficit to 18-16 but would not get closer as Midway tied the match.

In the third set, IU Southeast led 10-8 and used a 10-4 run to pull away. Emilee Organ had six kills in the set to spark the offense.

The fourth set was tight throughout until the Eagles used a 6-0 run late in the set to take a 21-14 lead. IU Southeast was able to cut the deficit to 23-21 after three-straight errors by Midway but a service error by Organ followed by a kill by Brooke Trompler sent the fourth set to the Eagles and tied the match. Trompler led the Eagles with 15 kills in the match.

In the deciding fifth set, back-to-back kills by Stallard and Nichols tied the frame at 5-5 early but later back-to-back kills and then an ace by Trompler extended the Midway lead to 10-6. A kill by Organ cut the Midway lead to 12-10 and then consecutive attack errors pulled the Grenadiers to within one at 13-12 but Trompler recorded consecutive kills to win the match the Eagles.

Hannah Sipe had 47 assists for the Grenadiers. Kenna Burman led IU Southeast with 18 digs while Sipe and Organ each added 14 and Santina Schembra had 13.

IU Southeast heads to Brescia University Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. No visiting spectators are allowed at Brescia indoor athletic events.
