UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS IU SOUTHEAST 81-66 THURSDAY

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team fell to the University of the Cumberlands 81-66 on Thursday, marking two wins in eight days for the Patriots over the Grenadiers.

Anthony Wales Jr. was the leading scorer for the Grenadiers, scoring 14 points in a team-high 35 minutes. Jared Osborne and Glenn Hill both scored double digits, adding 13 and 10 points respectively. Richard Lang brought down 11 rebounds in the contest.   

The Grenadiers (1-4) jumped ahead early, scoring the first seven points of the contest. The Grenadiers saw their lead increase to thirteen points on three different occasions in the first half. A jumper from Wales Jr. with 5 seconds left in the half gave the Grenadiers a 35-27 halftime lead.

Anthony Wales Jr. scored 10 of his 14 points in the opening half. Gabriel Casillas Cruz provided a spark off the bench in the first half, hitting two three-point shots. Lang had eight rebounds in 13 first half minutes.

Cumberlands (5-0) fell behind by as many as 14 points after halftime. After a Glenn Hill three pointer gave the Grenadiers a 50-39 lead, the Patriots responded in a major way, scoring 21 straight points to take a 60-50 lead with 7:34 to go. Cumberlands held the lead for the rest of the game, going on to take the contest 81-66.

Second half shooting was the deciding factor in the game. Cumberlands shot 76.9 percent from the field in the second half, while IU Southeast shot just 27.8 percent after the half. The Patriots attempted 16 more free throws than the Grenadiers in the contest.

The Grenadiers shot 36.4 percent from the field, 30.8 percent (8-26) from behind the three-point arc and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free throw line. They had seven steals and four blocks as a team.

IU Southeast plays Campbellsville at 2:00 PM ET in the continuation of the Cumberlands Tournament on Friday.
