Box Score St. Mary's, Ind. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team held St. Mary-of-the-Woods to just 20 points in the first half en route to a 76-52 win on Saturday.
Jared Osborne sparked the Grenadier offense in the first half, scoring 14 points in the opening 20 minutes and 10 of the first 14 points for IU Southeast. He finished with 18 points in the contest to lead IU Southeast. Glenn Hill Jr. had 10 of his 12 points in the first half and Gabriel Casiilas Cruz had 10 points and eight rebounds in the win.
The best defensive performance of the season for the Grenadiers helped them pull away late in the first half,
The Grenadiers held the Pomeroys to 25 percent shooting from the field in the first half (8-of-31) and forced eight turnovers. The Pomeroys shot 33 percent from the field in the game.
IU Southeast fell behind 14-8 seven minutes into the contest before outscoring the Pomeroys 32-6 for the remainder of the half.
IU Southeast only led 23-16 with 5:30 to play in the first half but back-to-back steals by Jaren Starks and Anthony Wales Jr. led to baskets by Jathan Ritter and Wales which pushed the lead to double figures.
A Richard Lang dunk extended the lead to 31-18 and a three-point play by Wales moved the lead to 36-18. IU Southeast led 40-20 at halftime.
Seven different Grenadiers scored in the first half and 11 different players recorded points in the contest. IU Southeast shot 44 percent from the field in the opening half and 41 percent for the game.
In the second half, Cruz opened the period with a three-pointer and then scored on a layup on consecutive possessions which took any chance of securing momentum away from the Pomeroys. Though the Pomeroys shot almost 40 percent in the second half, the deficit was too large to overcome.
The IU Southeast bench outscored the Pomeroys' 29-15 and the Grenadiers were dominant on the glass, outrebounding SMWC 53-38.
IU Southeast travels to No. 16 Georgetown College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
