Grenadiers Weather RedStorm in Five-Set Thriller

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated Rio Grande in five sets (18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 17-15) on Friday.
 
IU Southeast fell behind 11-5 in the first set. Trailing 16-7, the Grenadiers used a 3-0 run to narrow the deficit to 16-10. After two points from Rio Grande, IU Southeast used an 8-4 run to cut the RedStorm lead to 22-18. Rio Grande closed with three straight points to win the first set 25-18.
 
The Grenadiers jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set. A kill by Jessi Kramer gave IU Southeast a 12-7 lead, but Rio Grande scored four straight points to cut the lead to 12-11. The teams traded points until they were deadlocked at 16-16. A 4-1 run by IU Southeast made it 20-17, but the RedStorm roared back to take a 21-20 lead. With the score tied at 22-22, IU Southeast used a 3-0 run to take the second set 25-22.
 
Rio Grande jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the third set. With the score at 15-8, Rio Grande scored three straight points to take an 18-8 lead. Trailing 20-9, IU Southeast used a 7-1 run to narrow the deficit to five at 21-16. The RedStorm thwarted the Grenadier comeback, however, taking the third set 25-18.
 
The fourth set saw IU Southeast take an 11-7 lead on a kill by Ella Brooks. The Grenadiers held steady, taking a 15-11 lead on another kill by Ella Brooks. After Rio Grande cut the lead to two, IU Southeast used a 5-1 run to take a 20-14 lead. The RedStorm used a 5-1 run of their own to cut the Grenadier lead to two at 21-19. IU Southeast responded with a 4-1 run to take the fourth set 25-20.
 
IU Southeast took a 6-2 lead to begin the fifth set. Trailing 7-4, Rio Grande used a 7-1 run to swing the lead in their favor at 11-8. Rio Grande took a 14-10 lead, but the Grenadiers answered with five straight points to take a 15-14 lead. Rio Grande tied the set at 15-15, but a kill by Ella Brooks and a RedStorm attack error gave the Grenadiers a 17-15 fifth set win. The Grenadiers took the match 3-2.
 
Ella Brooks led the Grenadiers with 19 kills. Jessi Kramer added 13 kills, and Allison Daves had 11. Cate Murphy had 49 assists to lead IU Southeast. Allison Daves, Cate Murphy and Ella Brooks each had two aces apiece in the win.
 
IU Southeast moved to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in RSC play. The Grenadiers host WVU Tech on Saturday.
