MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team could not overcome a slow start and fell in five sets to Midway on Friday.
The Grenadiers took an 8-6 lead in the first set after
Emilee Organ recorded a kill, but the Eagles scored six-straight points to take a 12-8 lead.
IU Southeast scored nine of the next 12 points to take a 17-15 lead.
Ella Brooks had two kills and
Cate Murphy and
Lexi Striegel each had aces during the run.
Abby Ruzanka and
Emilee Organ also had kills.
A kill by
Abby Marks put the Grenadiers in front 18-16, but the Eagles went back in front with four-straight points.
A kill and Midway ace pushed the lead to 23-20. Two-straight Midway errors cut the lead to one but back-to-back kills won the set for the Eagles.
The second set was dominated by Midway. The Eagles recorded an attack percentage of .357 and 19 kills and four errors during the period.
IU Southeast only had two attack errors but could only manage nine kills in the set.
Midway jumped out to a 13-5 lead and took the set 25-16.
The Eagles had 33 kills in the first two sets and IU Southeast had 20 even though they limited their attack errors to eight combined.
The third set was much closer as neither team could jump out to a comfortable lead. A kill by
Ella Brooks tied the set at 15, but the Eagles scored the next three points.
IU Southeast responded with a quick 4-0 run as
Alanna Wray had two aces and Organ had a kill. The Grenadiers forced set point at 26-25 after the lead see-sawed back-and-forth.
An attack error made it 26-25 IU Southeast but two kills by the Eagles forced a Midway match point.
Ella Brooks had consecutive kills and then
Abby Ruzanka won the set for IU Southeast 29-27.
In the fourth set, a kill by
Jessi Kramer put IU Southeast in front 12-11. With set tied at 13, the Eagles scored six of the next 10 points to take a 19-17 lead.
Midway led 21-18 after consecutive kills by Hannah Brink but IU Southeast closed the set on a 7-2 run to force a fifth set.
Emilee Organ sparked the run with an ace,
Ella Brooks had three kills and
Lexi Striegel had a kill and an ace.
Midway roared away in the fifth set, taking a 5-0 lead. IU Southeast pulled to within three multiple times but could not get closer.
Ella Brooks had 21 kills to lead the Grenadiers,
Emilee Organ had 16 and
Jessi Kramer added 10.
Cate Murphy had 43 assists.

Lexi Striegel each had three aces.
Thought the Grenadier attack errors were limited in the five sets, IU Southeast recorded 18 service errors to Midway's eight.
The Grenadiers travel to IUPUC on Friday.
