OWENSBORO, Ky. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team used 45 points from
Jocobi Hendricks to defeat Brescia 77-72 on Tuesday.
IU Southeast took an early 11-6 lead on a three by
Caleb Brown. After Brescia cut the lead to 13-11,
Jocobi Hendricks scored the next eight points for IU Southeast to give the Grenadiers a 21-14 lead.
Brescia cut the lead to 23-20, but a layup by
Jocobi Hendricks and a three by
Armani Carr extended the Grenadier lead to eight at 28-20. The Bearcats responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 28-28.
With the score tied at 30-30,
Jocobi Hendricks scored the final six points of the half to give IU Southeast a 36-30 halftime advantage.
IU Southeast opened the second half with a quick 5-0 run to extend their lead to double digits at 41-30. Brescia attempted to chip away at the lead, but the Grenadiers would answer right back. A three by
Jaden Johnson gave IU Southeast a 57-45 lead with nine minutes to play.
IU Southeast took a 64-53 lead on two free throws by
Jocobi Hendricks, but Brescia responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to six at 64-58. The Grenadiers responded with a 5-0 run of their own to extend the lead back to 11 at 69-58.
IU Southeast led by 11 with 1:48 remaining, but Brescia used a 7-1 run to cut the Grenadier lead to five with one minute left. Brescia cut the lead to four at 73-69 with 34 seconds to go.
IU Southeast hit two free throws to go up by six, but Brescia answered with a layup to cut the lead back to four. IU Southeast missed two free throws and then fouled a Brescia shooter to give the Bearcats a chance to cut the lead to one with less than ten seconds to go. Brescia only hit one of the three free throw attempts, and IU Southeast iced the game with two free throws of their own to secure a 77-72 victory.
Jocobi Hendricks finished with 45 points on 17-25 shooting and 10 rebounds. The 45 points are one shy of the IU Southeast single game record, and the 17 made field goals tied the single game program record.
J.J. Reed also finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
IU Southeast (4-4, 1-0 RSC) returns to action at home against Oakland City on Saturday.
