OWENSBORO, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team opened conference play on Tuesday with a 39-38 win over host Brescia.
Karly Sweeney led IU Southeast with 14 points and
Leah Miller added 12 in the win.
The Grenadiers trailed 5-0 in the first quarter but Sweeney hit a three-pointer and two free-throws by
Taylor Treat tied the game.
A layup by Sweeney put the Grenadiers in front.
Brescia took a 12-11 lead in the second quarter but IU Southeast never trailed again when
Leah Miller hit a jumper and then on three-pointer to push IU Southeast in front 18-16.
Karly Sweeney connected on a three-pointer with under a minute to play in the half to extend the lead to 21-18 at halftime.
A layup by
Linzie Wernert put the Grenadiers in front 32-25 and they led 34-28 at the end of the third quarter.
IU Southeast would only score five points in the fourth but they withstood a rally from Brescia who cut the lead to one on an offensive rebound and layup by Madelyn Lyon with 35 seconds to play.
Brescia had a shot to win the game but a three-pointer missed and the Bearcats could not hang on to the offensive rebound.
The Grenadiers forced 27 turnovers and committed 10 in the win.
The Grenadiers host Oakland City Saturday at 1 p.m.
