CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team fell 76-72 to the University of the Cumberlands on Friday despite a 36-point effort from
Jocobi Hendricks.
IU Southeast took an early 6-2 lead on back-to-back three pointers by
Caleb Brown and
Jocobi Hendricks. The Grenadiers took a 15-10 lead on a layup by
J.J. Reed. IU Southeast extended their lead to seven at 19-12 on a jumper by
Lane Lauderbaugh. Trailing 21-15, Cumberlands used a 9-0 run to take a 24-21 lead.
Cumberlands held a 31-25 lead with five minutes left in the half. The Grenadiers were able to narrow the deficit to two at 33-31, but the Patriots scored four straight points to extend their lead back to six at 37-31. With IU Southeast trailing 39-33,
Jocobi Hendricks hit a three to narrow the halftime deficit to three at 39-36.
IU Southeast opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 45-39 advantage. Cumberlands answered with a 6-1 run to cut the Grenadier lead to one at 46-45. The Patriots tied the game at 53-53 before a three by
Armani Carr gave IU Southeast a 56-53 lead with 12:16 remaining.
Lane Lauderbaugh followed with a tip-in to extend the Grenadier lead to five.
A 6-0 run by Cumberlands gave the Patriots a 61-58 lead with 8:16 to go. Not to be outdone,
Jocobi Hendricks scored seven straight points to give IU Southeast a 65-61 advantage with 5:49 remaining. The Patriots rattled off five straight points to retake the lead, but a three by
Caleb Brown put the Grenadiers back in front 70-69.
Two straight layups by Cumberlands swung the game back in their favor, giving the Patriots a 73-70 lead with 1:51 remaining.
Jocobi Hendricks responded with a layup to cut the Patriot lead to one with 1:34 left.
A free throw by Cumberlands gave the Patriots a 74-72 lead with 1:10 left. IU Southeast had the ball with a chance to tie, but a missed three put the ball back in the hands of Cumberlands with less than a minute left. The Patriots missed a shot of their own, giving IU Southeast a chance to tie once more. Cumberlands forced another stop, and the Patriots converted two more free throws with one second remaining to clinch a 76-72 victory.
Jocobi Hendricks led IU Southeast with 36 points and four steals. He also grabbed a share of the team lead with seven rebounds.
Lane Lauderbaugh scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in his first start of the season.
J.J. Reed and
Armani Carr each grabbed seven rebounds in the contest as well.
J.J. Reed also added three blocks to lead the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast (1-2) returns to action on Saturday at Campbellsville University.
