NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team handed No. 12 Cumberlands their first loss of the season on Saturday, defeating the Patriots 100-95 in overtime.
Cumberlands took a 7-2 lead early in the first half. IU Southeast took their first lead at 12-11 on a
J.J. Reed jumper. The teams went back and forth as the score was knotted at 27-27 with just over six minutes remaining in the half.
Cumberlands took a 31-27 lead on a three.
Jocobi Hendricks cut the lead to two with two free throws, but Cumberlands hit another three to go up by five. The Patriots led by seven at 41-34, but a
Lane Lauderbaugh layup cut the Grenadier deficit to 41-36 at the half.
IU Southeast was able to cut the deficit to three to start the second half, but Cumberlands extended their lead to eight at 48-40. Four straight points by IU Southeast cut the Patriot lead back to four at 48-44.
The Patriots were able to extend their lead back to seven at 57-50, but IU Southeast answered with another four-point burst to cut the lead to three at 57-54. Cumberlands extended their advantage back to six at 62-56, but four-straight points by
Jocobi Hendricks cut the Grenadier deficit to two at 62-60.
A three by Cumberlands gave the Patriots a 65-60 lead.
Jocobi Hendricks answered with a layup, but Cumberlands came back with two free throws to extend their lead back to five at 67-62.
Cumberlands maintained a two-possession lead until a
Lane Lauderbaugh three cut the Patriot advantage to one at 76-75. Cumberlands hit a free throw to make it 77-75, but
Jocobi Hendricks scored to tie the game at 77-77 with 1:56 to go.
Jocobi Hendricks hit two free throws to give IU Southeast a 79-77 lead. Cumberlands answered with a basket of their own to tie the game once more at 79-79.
J.J. Reed hit two free throws to give IU Southeast an 81-79 advantage. A steal and a dunk by Cumberlands tied the game at 81-81 with 32 seconds left.
Jocobi Hendricks hit a free throw to give IU Southeast a one-point edge at 82-81, but Cumberlands answered with a pair of free throws to give the Patriots an 83-82 lead.
Jocobi Hendricks drew a foul and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 83-83 to send the contest into overtime.
Lane Lauderbaugh hit a three to begin overtime to give IU Southeast an 86-83 lead. Cumberlands responded with a layup to cut the Grenadier lead to one, but a jumper by
Richard Lang gave IU Southeast an 88-85 edge. Two
Jocobi Hendricks free throws gave IU Southeast a 90-85 advantage with 2:55 to go.
A 4-1 run by Cumberlands cut the IU Southeast lead to two at 91-89, but a layup by
Lane Lauderbaugh extended the Grenadier advantage back to four at 93-89. Cumberlands hit two free throws to cut the lead back to two, but
J.J. Reed hit a layup to give IU Southeast a 95-91 edge.
Cumberlands hit a free throw to make it 95-92, but
Jocobi Hendricks hit a three with 30 seconds to go to give IU Southeast a 98-92 lead. IU Southeast would go on to defeat Cumberlands 100-95.
Jocobi Hendricks led IU Southeast with 44 points, 33 of which came after halftime.
J.J. Reed recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Lane Lauderbaugh had 18 points and seven rebounds in the victory.
IU Southeast (6-6, 2-2 RSC) returns to action on January 4
th at home against Shawnee State.
