IU Southeast Comeback Falls Short As Shawnee State Escapes 79-75

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team rallied from a 19 -point 1st-half deficit but could not outlast Shawnee State as the Grenadiers fell 79-75 on Thursday.
 
The game was tied at 23 with six minutes left in the first half after a Jocobi Hendricks layup but the Bears used a 22-3 run to pull away in latter stages of the half. IU Southeast hit two field goals in the final six minutes of the half, both by Caleb Brown.
 
The Grenadiers trailed 45-28 at halftime.
 
Lane Lauderbuagh sparked the Grenadiers' second-half rally. He scored the first nine points for IU Southeast in the second half and cut the lead to 47-37.
 
A three-point play by J.J. Reed cut the lead to 56-48 with 11:35 to play.
 
After a Shawnee State basket, Lauderbaugh connected on a three-pointer and then scored on a layup to cut the lead to 60-53.
 
A layup by Ethan Haddaway cut the lead to five.
 
Chaze Harris answered with a layup to push the lead back to seven, but J.J. Reed completed another three-point play to cut the lead 62-56 with 7:45 to go.
 
The Lauderbaugh came through again. He scored on a layup and then hit a three-pointer and a jumper to cut the deficit to 68-63.
 
After a defensive stop, Brown hit a three to cut the lead to two.
 
Another missed layup gave the Grenadiers a chance to tie and Lauderbaugh got a layup to go.
 
After a Shawnee State basket, Matthew Jones hit a three-pointer from the corner to give the Grenadiers the lead 71-70 with 3:35 to play.
 
The Bears tied the game with a free throw but missed the second to keep the game tied at 71.
 
Jaden Johnson hit two free throws but the Bears scored on consecutive possessions to take the lead 75-73 with 1:14 left.
 
After three-point try missed by IU Southeast, Caleb Brown had to foul to keep the Grenadiers hopes alive. But the Bears connected on their final four free-throws to keep the lead out of reach.
 
Shawnee State was 10-of-14 from the line in the second half which proved the difference.

Lane Lauderbaugh had 25 of his career -high 31 points in the second half to get IU Southeast back in the contest.
 
J.J. Reed scored eight of his 12 in the second half as well.
 
IU Southeast shot 53 percent in the second half but the Bears shot 50 percent from the field in the contest even though they were held scoreless from three-point range in the second half.
 
IU Southeast got back in the contest by forcing 14 turnovers which led to 23 points and only committed seven turnovers in the game.
 
IU Southeast hosts Point Park Saturday at 3 p.m.
