NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated Midway 25-12. 25-20, 25-20 on Friday behind a stellar serving attack.
The Grenadiers jumped out quickly with a dominant first-set performance. IU Southeast had an attack percentage of .343 to open the match and had 15 kills in the set.
Two kills by
Emilee Organ, a kill by
Jessi Kramer and an ace by
Cate Murphy extended the IU Southeast lead to 7-1.
Two kills by
Ella Brooks, one by
Haley Jaster and two errors sparked a 5-0 IU Southeast run and a 13-4 lead.
A 6-1 run pushed the lead to 21-8. A kill by Brooks forced set point and an error ended the opening frame at a 25-12 win for the Grenadiers.
The second set was much more competitive. The period was tied at 8 but four-straight Grenadier points, kills by Brooks and Jaster and then two Brooks aces, put IU Southeast in front 12-8.
After back-to-back kills by Midway forced an IU Southeast timeout at 16-14, IU Southeast took a 21-17 lead with a kill by Jaster and ace by Brooks.
A service error and a bad set forced a Midway timeout with IU Southeast leading 23-18. A kill by Organ and an attack error won the set 25-20.
In the third set, a kill by
Abby Ruzanka and ace by Lexi Streigel gave IU Southeast an 8-4 lead.
With IU Southeast clinging to a 9-7 lead, a Midway service error, a
Brianna Bucher ace and a kill by Jaster extended the lead to 12-7.
After Midway cut the lead to 18-17, the Grenadiers roared back to take a 23-17 lead, Brooks, Murphy and Jaster all had kills.
A kill by
Haley Jaster forced match point at 24-19 and then
Emilee Organ won the match with a kill at 25-20.
Emilee Organ had 14 kills to lead iU Southeast,
Haley Jaster had 12 and
Ella Brooks added nine. The Grenadiers had 14 aces to Midway's zero.
Ella Brooks had five, Murphy had four and
Isabelle George added two.
Cate Muphy had 37 assists in the win and
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 19 digs.
IU Southeast hosts St. Mary-of-the-Woods Saturday at noon.
