NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in five sets on Saturday.
IU Southeast used an 8-2 run in the first set to take a 13-6 lead to force a SMWC timeout. A 5-1 run later in the set extended the Grenadier lead to 18-10. The Pomeroys responded with a 6-0 run to narrow the deficit to 18-16. IU Southeast used a kill by
Haley Jaster to win the first set 25-20.
SMWC took a 10-5 lead early in the second set. Trailing 13-6, IU Southeast used an 8-2 run to narrow the deficit to one at 15-14. The Pomeroys answered with five straight points to extend their advantage to 20-14. The Grenadiers were able to cut the lead to three, but SMWC would go on to take the second set 25-19.
With the teams deadlocked at 6-6 to open the third set, the Grenadiers used kills by
Haley Jaster and
Ella Brooks and an ace by
Brianna Bucher to take a 9-6 lead. SMWC scored four straight points to take a 10-9 advantage. With SMWC ahead 11-10, IU Southeast scored four of the next five points to swing the lead in their favor at 14-12. The Pomeroys answered once again, taking a 16-14 lead.
IU Southeast managed to take the lead back at 17-16. The teams traded points until SMWC scored back-to-back points to take a 21-20 edge. The Grenadiers scored two points of their own to take a 22-21 lead. A kill by
Emilee Organ gave the Grenadiers a 24-23 lead, but SMWC rattled off three straight points to take the third set 26-24.
SMWC scored five straight points to open the fourth set. The Grenadiers used kills by
Emilee Organ and
Ella Brooks to narrow the deficit to two at 8-6. Trailing 12-6, IU Southeast used a 6-2 run to cut the SMWC lead to 14-12. A point by SMWC made it 15-12, but the Grenadiers used a 5-1 run to jump ahead 17-16. The teams were tied 19-19 before IU Southeast scored three straight points to make it 22-19. The Grenadiers would go on to take the fourth set 25-22.
The fifth set saw IU Southeast jump out to an early 5-1 lead. With a 6-4 lead, IU Southeast used two aces by
Brianna Bucher and kills by
Haley Jaster and
Ella Brooks to take a 10-4 edge. The Grenadiers used kills by
Emilee Organ and
Jessi Kramer to give IU Southeast a 15-8 fifth set win to clinch a 3-2 match victory.
Emilee Organ led IU Southeast with 19 kills.
Haley Jaster had 16 kills and
Ella Brooks added 13. The Grenadiers had seven aces in the contest, led by
Brianna Bucher with three and
Cate Murphy with two.
Jessi Kramer led the Grenadiers with three blocks.
Cate Murphy had 51 assists to lead IU Southeast.
IU Southeast moved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in RSC play with the victory. The Grenadiers host IUPUC on Tuesday in an RSC matchup.
