OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit but fell in five sets to Oakland City 25-22, 25-18, 11-25, 19-25, 15-13 on Tuesday.
IU Southeast fell behind 14-8 in the first set and slowly chipped away to get the set tied.A kill by
Jessi Kramer cut the lead to 19-17 and a ball-handling error followed by a
Haley Jaster kill cut the lead to 22-21.
With the Mighty Oaks clinging to a 23-22 lead, back-to-back Grenadier attack errors sent the set to Oakland City 25-22.
IU Southeast committed eight errors in the first set to help Oakland City secure the frame.
The Grenadiers fell behind 6-0 to start the second set and Oakland City extended the lead to 14-5 after an IU Southeast service error.
A kill by
Emilee Organ cut the lead to 15-9 but the Mighty Oaks scored five of the next six points to take a 20-10 advantage and won the set 25-18.
IU Southeast roared back to take the third set 25-11. IU Southeast capitalized on 11 attack errors after the Mighty Oaks had 10 total in the first two sets combined.
The Grenadiers used a 5-1 run to take a 13-5 lead behind kills by
Emilee Organ and
Jessi Kramer and three errors including an attack error on a block from Kramer and Jaster.
Two kills by Jaster and one by
Ella Brooks extended the IU Southeast led to 20-9 and they cruised to a 25-11 win.
In the fourth set, IU Southeast jumped out to an 8-5 lead and two Oakland City errors pushed the lead to 10-5.
A brief Oakland City run cut the lead to 12-8 but iU Southeast responded by scoring four of the next five points to get some breathing room with kills from Organ and Brooks as well as two attack errors.
An Oakland City service error tied the match at two sets apiece.
IU Southeast jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final set with kills by Organ and
Abby Marks and an ace by
Cate Murphy capped the run.
A ball-handling error extended the lead to 7-1 but Oakland City answered with a 9-3run to cut the lead to tie the set at 10.
A kill by
Jessi Kramer put IU Southeast in front 13-12 but a kill by Laura Betsa and a block from Mariana Anastasiadil gave Oakland City match point.
A kill by Laura Scapini won the match for Oakland City in five sets.
Emilee Organ had 12 kills and
Haley Jaster and
Ella Brooks each added 11 for IU Southeast.
Abby Marks had 21 assists to lead the Grenadiers while
Cate Murphy had 19 assists and 12 digs.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 20 digs and
Jessi Kramer had six total blocks.
IU Southeast hosts Georgetown College Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the 2023 home opener for the Grenadiers.
