NEW ALBANY, Ind. –
Jocobi Hendricks led all scorers with 40 points and
Lane Lauderbaugh had 27 points and 10 rebounds as IU Southeast defeated Rio Grande 74-61 on Saturday.
The Grenadier duo scored 67 of the 74 points as only two other players scored in the contest,
Richard Lang (4) and
Matthew Jones (3).
The first half started slowly on the offensive side with neither team able to pull away. A Lauderbaugh jumper extended the Grenadier lead to 19-16 with 9:47 to play in the first half.
Richard Lang scored on a layup off a nice feed from Lauderbaugh followed by a jumper by Hendricks as IU Southeast led 23-18 with under eight minutes to play.
IU Southeast was unable to pull away and led by no more than six in the first half.
The RedStorm tied the game when Trent Hundley hit a three-pointer with three minutes to play in the half.
Lauderbaugh closed the half by hitting a jumper as time expired to extend the IU Southeast lead to 31-26 at halftime.
He finished the period with 16 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and Hendricks added 13 points.
Jocobi Hendricks put the game away early in the second half by scoring the first 15 points of the frame for IU Southeast.
He started the half by connecting on back-to-back three-point field goals to extend the lead to double-figures.
Rio Grande cut the lead back to nine after a layup by Trent Hundley and Trey Robertson and Taylor Mack each hit three-pointers to cut the deficit to eight but the RedStorm would not get closer.
After Mack's three-pointer cut the lead to 46-38 with 13:50 to play, Lauderbaugh hit two free-throws and then a three-pointer to extend the lead to 51-38.
A steal by
Jaden Johnson led to another Lauderbaugh three and a 54-38 lead.
After the RedStorm cut into the lead, three-pointers on consecutive possessions extended the IU Southeast to 20.
Jocobi Hendricks connected followed by a rebound by
Matthew Jones and he was rewarded with a corner three at the other end to make it a 65-45 lead.
After only hitting one three-pointer in the first half, the Grenadiers were 7-of-9 in the second half from behind-the-arc.
IU Southeast shot 50 percent from the field in the contest and was 54 percent from the field in the second half to pull away.
The Grenadiers held Rio Grande to 28 percent shooting (7-of-25) from three-point range in the game.
Jocobi Hendricks recorded his fourth 40-point game of the season and Lauderbaugh had his first double-double of the year.
IU Southeast travels to Midway Saturday at 3 p.m.
