IU Southeast Thwarts Late Rally to Defeat Midway 70-62

MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team defeated Midway 70-62 on Saturday.
 
Midway hit a three to start the game, but IU Southeast responded with a 10-0 run to take a 10-3 lead. IU Southeast held Midway without a basket from the 9:18 mark to the 1:53 mark of the first quarter. The Grenadiers led 17-10 after the first.
 
IU Southeast took a double-digit lead at 21-11 following a Karly Sweeney three. Midway responded with a 7-0 run to cut the IU Southeast lead to three at 21-18. The Grenadiers used a 6-2 run to extend their lead to seven at 27-20.
 
Midway cut the Grenadier lead back to three at 29-26. IU Southeast took a 30-26 lead into halftime.
 
IU Southeast used an Abby Young three to take a 33-26 lead to start the third quarter. Midway answered with five straight points to cut the deficit to two at 33-31. IU Southeast was able to extend their lead to 39-33, but Midway hit a three to make it 39-36.
 
Leah Miller connected on a three to extend the IU Southeast lead back to six at 42-36. The Grenadiers increased their lead to eight at 47-39 on a Katie Durbin layup. Leah Miller followed with a layup to give IU Southeast a 49-39 advantage. IU Southeast led 50-41 headed into the fourth quarter.
 
After a Makenna Wilson three gave IU Southeast a 53-43 lead to open the fourth quarter, Midway used a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four at 53-49. Grace Stapleton hit a three on the next possession to give IU Southeast a 56-49 edge.
 
Midway was able to cut the Grenadier lead back to two at 56-54. After a Linzie Wernert layup made it 58-54, Midway hit a three to make it a one-point game. Karly Sweeney went to the free throw line on back-to-back possessions to give IU Southeast a 61-57 edge.
 
Midway once again cut the IU Southeast lead to two at 63-61 with two minutes remaining. Karly Sweeney hit a free throw to make it 64-61 Grenadiers. Midway missed a potential game-tying three, and Leah Miller connected on two free throws to make it 66-61 IU Southeast.
 
Midway went to the free throw line to make it a one possession game with 24 seconds left, but the Eagles only connected on one of two free throws. Linzie Wernert stepped up to the line for the Grenadiers and hit both to give IU Southeast a 68-62 edge. IU Southeast would go on to win 70-62.
 
Leah Miller led IU Southeast with 18 points and three assists. Karly Sweeney had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Linzie Wernert scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. All 10 Grenadiers that appeared in the game scored at least two points in the win.

IU Southeast (6-10, 3-6 RSC) returns to action on Tuesday in a road contest against Alice Lloyd.
