PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team defeated Alice Lloyd 78-70 for their third straight victory.
IU Southeast started the game on a 7-0 run following two
Linzie Wernert baskets and a
Karly Sweeney three. Alice Lloyd answered with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game at 7-7.
Alice Lloyd took an 11-9 lead, but
Grace Stapleton hit a three to give IU Southeast the lead back at 12-11. The Eagles ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 22-12 lead into the second quarter.
IU Southeast used a
Jesse Ledgerwood layup and two
Lexi Starr free throws to cut the Grenadier deficit to six to open the second quarter.
Linzie Wernert followed with a layup to cut the Eagle lead to four at 22-18, but Alice Lloyd hit a three to extend their lead back to seven.
IU Southeast used a
Taylor Treat three to cap off a 10-0 run to take a 31-28 lead. IU Southeast took a 37-36 lead into halftime.
Alice Lloyd opened the third quarter with a layup to give the Eagles a 38-37 edge.
Jesse Ledgerwood hit a three and
Leah Miller hit a layup to give IU Southeast a 42-38 advantage. After an Alice Lloyd free throw,
Katie Durbin hit a layup to make it 44-39 Grenadiers.
Leah Miller connected with another layup to extend the Grenadier lead to six at 47-41. After a made basket by Alice Lloyd,
Karly Sweeney connected on a three to give IU Southeast a 50-43 edge.
Alice Lloyd cut the Grenadier lead to four, but IU Southeast extended their lead to as many as nine in the third quarter. The Grenadiers led 63-58 headed into the fourth.
Alice Lloyd opened the fourth quarter with five straight points to tie the game at 63-63. IU Southeast used a
Leah Miller free throw and a
Jesse Ledgerwood three to take a four-point lead at 67-63.
Karly Sweeney hit a layup to give the Grenadiers a 69-63 edge. Alice Lloyd hit a layup of their own to make it 69-65, but a
Karly Sweeney free throw gave IU Southeast a 70-65 advantage with 2:45 remaining.
Taylor Treat connected on two free throws with 1:45 left to give IU Southeast a 72-65 lead. Alice Lloyd scored a basket, but IU Southeast answered with a jumper by
Karly Sweeney to take a 74-67 edge with 48 seconds left. IU Southeast would go on to win 78-70.
Karly Sweeney led the Grenadiers with a career-high 23 points and five assists.
Linzie Wernert also set a career-high with 21 points and grabbed a share of the team lead with seven rebounds.
Jesse Ledgerwood had 13 points, and
Leah Miller added seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.
IU Southeast (7-10, 4-6 RSC) returns to action on Saturday on the road against WVU Tech.
