BECKLEY, W.Va. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team defeated WVU Tech 60-50 on Saturday for their fourth straight win.
WVU Tech jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the first quarter. IU Southeast was held scoreless for nearly five minutes before
Karly Sweeney connected on a three.
The Grenadiers closed the first quarter on a 13-0 run, holding the WVU Tech offense scoreless for the final eight minutes of the quarter. IU Southeast led 13-5 after the first.
WVU Tech scored the first four points of the second quarter, but IU Southeast used a
Linzie Wernert jumper and a
Jesse Ledgerwood three to take an 18-9 lead. Trailing 19-12, WVU Tech used a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two at 19-17.
Leading 25-22, IU Southeast scored five straight points to extend their advantage to eight at 30-22. WVU Tech closed the second quarter on a 5-0 run of their own to cut the Grenadier lead to 30-27 at the half.
Leah Miller hit a three to open the third quarter for IU Southeast to give the Grenadiers a 33-27 edge.
Jesse Ledgerwood followed with another three to give IU Southeast a 36-27 lead.
IU Southeast extended their advantage to double digits at 40-29 following a
Karly Sweeney layup. Back-to-back baskets by
Katie Durbin gave the Grenadiers a 44-31 lead. IU Southeast led 44-34 after three quarters.
Linzie Wernert opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give IU Southeast a 46-34 lead. After a three by WVU Tech, IU Southeast used a three by
Linzie Wernert to extend their lead back to 12 at 49-37.
WVU Tech cut the IU Southeast lead to eight at 51-43, but a
Jesse Ledgerwood three gave IU Southeast an 11-point lead at 54-43. The Golden Bears answered with five straight points to cut the Grenadier lead to six at 54-48.
WVU Tech hit a jumper to cut the deficit to five at 55-50 with 50 seconds left, but IU Southeast connected on five of their six free throw attempts down the stretch to secure a 60-50 victory.
Jesse Ledgerwood led IU Southeast with 16 points, connecting on a team-high four three-pointers.
Leah Miller had 14 points, six rebounds, and a team-high five assists.
Linzie Wernert registered a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Katie Durbin scored a career-high 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Karly Sweeney had eight points and eight rebounds.
IU Southeast (8-10, 5-6 RSC) will take a four-game winning streak into a home contest against IU East on Tuesday.
