BECKLEY, West Virginia – The West Virginia Tech men's basketball team shot 73 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 90-75 win over IU Southeast on Saturday.
Lane Lauderbaugh had 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the loss for IU Southeast.
J.J. Reed had 18 points and five rebounds and
Jocobi Hendricks had 12 points and five assists.
The Golden Bears were 19-of-26 from the field in the first half and 4-of-9 from three-point range. But the Grenadiers hung in early and took a 21-18 lead after Lauderbaugh hit a three-pointer with 11:16 to play in the half.
The Golden Bears answered with a 21-6 run over the next five minutes to take a 39-27 lead.
J.J. Reed hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to six with 2:18 to play and, later in the half, a three-point field goal by
Jocobi Hendricks cut the lead to five.
WVU Tech led 48-38 at halftime capitalizing on a three-pointer, getting a steal and a basket at the end of the half.
The Grenadiers would not get within 10 points in the second half as the WVU Tech offense continued to connect.
As the Grenadiers tried to chip away at the deficit they were hampered by a perimeter offense that only managed one three-pointer in the second half.
The difference in the game was in the paint as the Grenadiers were outscored 49-30 and the usual opportunistic defense only forced seven turnovers in the contest.
IU Southeast hosts rival IU East Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
