NEW ALBANY, Ind. –
Jocobi Hendricks had 40 points and seven rebounds,
Lane Lauderbaugh had 25 points and five rebounds and
Jaden Johnson had 11 points as IU Southeast defeated IU East 96-86 on Tuesday.
The Grenadiers led for the entire contest as
Jocobi Hendricks opened the game by scoring 16 of the first 27 points for IU Southeast.
A jumper by Hendricks extended the Grenadier lead to 25-14 halfway through the first half and it looked as if IU Southeast was going to run away with the contest.
But the Red Wolves closed the half on a 9-2 run and trailed 35-31 halftime. Hendricks had 20 points in the first half to lead the Grenadiers.
In the second half, the teams traded three-pointers from Colt Meyer and
Jaden Johnson to extend the Grenadier lead to 40-34.
Jake Johnson hit a three-pointer and Ibra Athie hit one of two free-throws to cut the lead to just one.
But as Hendricks was driving for a layup he was fouled by Tobey Billups who committed a flagrant one foul and then a technical foul.
Hendricks hit all four free-throws and then scored on a jumper as IU Southeast retained possession and the Grenadiers led 52-45 with 13:39 to play.
An IU East turnover led to a
Jaden Johnson dunk and, once again, the Grenadiers looked poised to run away with the contest.
A three-point play by Athie cut the lead to five and later, in the period, he scored on a layup to cut the lead to 66-63.
Antuane Allen scored to cut the lead to 76-72 with six minutes to play and Lauderbaugh answered with a huge three-pointer to push the lead back to seven.
After the Red Wolves missed the front end of a one-and-one, Lauderbaugh scored again to extend the lead to 81-72.
Devon Woods made it a 81-76 game with 4:19 to play but Lauderbaugh scored on consecutive possessions and the Grenadiers got back-to-back defensive stops to seal the game.
Free throws secured the win for IU Southeast as they were 21-of-23 in the second half and 24-of-27 in the game.
Lane Lauderbaugh scored 20 of his 25 points in the final period.
