NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team fell to No. 11 IU Kokomo in three sets (21-25, 23-25, 18-25) on Friday.
An early 5-0 run by IU Kokomo gave the Cougars a 7-3 lead in the first set. IU Southeast cut the lead to one at 8-7, but back-to-back points gave IU Kokomo a 10-7 lead. A 4-0 run by IU Southeast gave the Grenadiers an 11-10 edge.
A 9-2 run by IU Kokomo gave the Cougars a 19-13 lead. After two points by IU Southeast, a 4-0 run by IU Kokomo made it 23-15. IU Southeast used a 6-1 run to cut the Cougar lead to 24-21, but IU Kokomo would take the first set 25-21.
Leading 4-3 in the second set, a 10-1 IU Kokomo run gave the Cougars a 14-4 lead. IU Kokomo led 17-9, but a 6-1 Grenadier run pulled IU Southeast within four at 17-13.
IU Southeast cut the lead to two at 19-17 and 21-19, but each time IU Kokomo answered with a point. IU Southeast cut the lead to one on three separate occasions, but IU Kokomo outlasted the Grenadiers to take the second set 25-23.
IU Kokomo took a 7-2 lead early in set three. Trailing 11-6, IU Southeast used a 5-2 run to cut the lead to two at 12-10. IU Kokomo extended their lead to five at 16-11, but IU Southeast answered with a 3-0 run to bring the lead back to two at 16-14.
A 7-1 run gave IU Kokomo a 23-15 lead. The Cougars would go on to take the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
"We created some good opportunities for ourselves tonight," IU Southeast head coach
Eric Brian said. "But we failed to capitalize on them. Had we done that, we would have been able to take the lead in a few late game situations and won some games."
Haley Jaster led IU Southeast with 11 kills and 4.0 blocks.
Carly Mason had 16 assists and
Kacy Hornish added 11.
Ella Davidson and
Ella Brooks each had six digs apiece.
Ella Brooks also added 3.0 blocks.
IU Southeast returns to action on Saturday against St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
