Robin Farris, Legendary Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Retires after 35 Seasons

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – IU Southeast women's basketball coach Robin Farris, the all-time winningest coach in program history, has retired, Athletic Director Tod Bannister announced today.

Farris, who took over the women's basketball program before the 1989-90 season, inherited a program that had seen seven coaches in 16 seasons. Coach Farris amassed a record of 593-438 in 35 seasons at the helm.

"We appreciate the 35 years of service that Coach Farris has given to IU Southeast athletics and the numerous student-athletes that he has impacted through his coaching," Tod Bannister said. "The Grenadier family wishes him all the best in his retirement."

A 1979 graduate of Tiffin University, Farris was the most valuable player (MVP), leading scorer, and captain of a team that captured the Mid-Ohio Conference basketball crown his senior season in college. He ranked eighth in scoring for the NAIA with an average of 26.8 points per game. After graduation he was awarded the title of assistant basketball coach and head baseball coach at his alma mater.

Farris embarked on a nine-year stint on the European basketball circuit; seven years as a player, and two as a coach. He played professionally for six years in England and one year in Scotland. Farris coached men's and women's Division I teams in Norway from 1986-88, and his 1988 women's team captured the national junior title. Farris was recognized for his work in 1995 when he was inducted into the Tiffin University Hall of Fame.

During his tenure, Farris led the Grenadiers to 12 regular season conference championships, two regional championships, six conference tournament titles and seven trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His 2001-02 squad advanced to the NAIA Sweet Sixteen. He was also named KIAC Coach of the Year eight times.

Under Farris, six IU Southeast women's basketball players were named KIAC Player of the Year. Eight Grenadiers were named to the NAIA Div. II First, Second, or Honorable Mention Team, and 35 Grenadiers were named to a KIAC/RSC All-Conference Team under Coach Farris.

Coach Farris is also the winningest coach in IU Southeast volleyball program history, recording a record of 328-193 in 16 seasons. IU Southeast volleyball took four trips to the NAIA National Tournament under Farris.

IU Southeast men's basketball assistant coach Derek Sims will lead the women's basketball team for the 2024-25 season.
