NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball continued their winning ways, defeating Ohio Christian 79-69 on Saturday. This is the third straight win for IU Southeast, and the third straight game the Grenadiers have scored exactly 79 points.
Ohio Christian took a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter to force an IU Southeast timeout. The Grenadiers responded with nine straight points to take a 9-4 lead. Ohio Christian answered with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 11-11.
An 8-0 run by the Grenadiers gave IU Southeast a 19-11 lead. IU Southeast led 19-12 after the first quarter.
A three by
Makenna Wilson to open the second quarter extended the IU Southeast lead to 10 at 22-12. A 6-2 run, featuring two straight threes by
Karly Sweeney, gave the Grenadiers a 29-15 edge.
Ohio Christian answered with an 11-0 run to cut their deficit to three at 29-26. IU Southeast rattled off seven straight points to extend their lead back at 10 at 36-26. Leading 36-30, IU Southeast used five straight
Jesse Ledgerwood points to take a 41-30 edge into the half.
IU Southeast opened the second half with back-to-back buckets to extend their lead to 15. Ohio Christian cut the lead to eight at 48-40, but back-to-back threes by
Karly Sweeney made it 54-40 IU Southeast.
Six straight points later in the quarter gave the Grenadiers a 60-43 advantage. IU Southeast led 62-47 at the end of three quarters.
Ohio Christian cut the lead to 11 at 67-56 in the fourth quarter, but a 7-0 Grenadier run gave IU Southeast a 74-56 edge. IU Southeast led by double digits the rest of the way en route to a 79-69 win.
"Tough week having three games with only one practice in between each to prepare" IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "3-0 during that stretch is a major accomplishment for us. I'm proud of everyone for being professional and fighting through the adversity. I thought Linzie, Karly, and Grace really took major steps forward during this stretch. Looking forward to some much needed time off before next Saturday. We still haven't put an entire game together but we're moving in a positive direction."
IU Southeast had five players score in double figures.
Karly Sweeney led the way with 20 points off the bench.
Linzie Wernert had 16 points and a team-high six assists.
Jesse Ledgerwood had 15 points, seven rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Grace Stapleton and
Makenna Wilson each had 10 points apiece.
Lexi Starr led the team with eight rebounds. Both Starr and
Taylor Treat had four assists.
The Grenadiers shot 46.4 percent from the field and 38.7 percent (12-31) from three.
IU Southeast looks to continue their winning ways when they return to action next Saturday at home against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg.
