COLUMBUS, Ga. – The IU Southeast softball team fell 3-1 to Georgia Gwinnett but bounced back to defeat Central Methodist 1-0 behind a complete game shutout from
Maci Warner.
In game one against Georgia Gwinnett, neither team scored until the third inning. After a triple to right center, Georgia Gwinnett used a fielder's choice to score the first run of the game.
IU Southeast trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Josie Lemmons singled, stole second and then advanced to third on a throwing error.
Autumn Oehlstrom followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the sixth, Georgia Gwinnett led off the inning with a double, but a line drive double play erased the base runner. The Grizzlies drew a walk with two outs, and that runner would come around to score after a misplayed fly ball by IU Southeast. A single would follow to give Georgia Gwinnett a 3-1 lead.
IU Southeast threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but the Grenadiers had runners thrown out at second and home in the inning to thwart the attempted scoring rally. Georgia Gwinnett would go on to win 3-1.
Madison Wathen got the start for IU Southeast and allowed one hit and one run in 3.1 innings while striking out six.
Hannah Nunemaker pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, and
Hallie Foley threw the final two innings for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast took on Central Methodist in game two of the doubleheader. Central Methodist had a runner on third with one out in the first inning, but
Maci Warner used a strike out and a groundout to get out of the jam.
Central Methodist had a runner in scoring position in the second inning following a ground-rule double, but a groundout back to
Maci Warner ended the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Central Methodist started the inning with back-to-back walks to put two runners on with no outs. After a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, there were runners on second and third with one out, but back-to-back groundouts kept the game scoreless.
IU Southeast threatened in the top of the fifth.
Chloee Shewmaker drew a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. After a strikeout, Shewmaker advanced to third on a passed ball with two outs. This time, Central Methodist used a groundout to get out of the jam.
The score remained 0-0 headed into the sixth inning. With two outs,
Josie Lemmons reached on a ball that ricocheted off the glove of the third baseman.
Autumn Oehlstrom followed with a single to move Lemmons to third, and
Erin Templeman followed with an infield single to drive in Lemmons and give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
Neither team would score for the rest of the game as IU Southeast secured a 1-0 victory.
Freshman
Maci Warner threw a complete game shutout for IU Southeast, allowing just four hits while striking out six.
Autumn Oehlstrom had two of IU Southeast's three hits.
Erin Templeman drove in the game's only run.
IU Southeast finishes off their five-game Georgia trip with a game against Campbellsville at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
