NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team defeated Midway 84-79 on Thursday.
With the teams tied at 4-4, IU Southeast scored six straight points to take a 10-4 lead. Trailing 12-6, Midway answered with a 4-0 run to cut the Grenadier lead to 12-10.
The Grenadiers used back-to-back jumpers by
Lexi Starr and
Leah Miller and a three by
Linzie Wernert to extend their lead to 19-10. Midway used a 7-0 run to make it 19-17.
A three by
Linzie Wernert and a layup by
Jesse Ledgerwood gave IU Southeast a 24-17 lead. IU Southeast led 28-22 after the first quarter.
IU Southeast opened the second quarter with a three-point play by
Grace Stapleton and a free throw by
Jesse Ledgerwood to take a 32-22 lead. After a
Taylor Treat layup made it 34-24, Midway used a 7-0 run to cut the Grenadier edge to three at 34-31.
Layups by
Lexi Starr and
Katie Durbin gave IU Southeast a 38-31 advantage. After two Midway free throws, IU Southeast scored 11 straight points to take a 49-33 lead. Midway responded with seven straight points to make it 49-40. IU Southeast led 54-45 at the half.
A
Lexi Starr three gave IU Southeast a 59-50 lead in the third quarter. Five straight points by
Leah Miller gave the Grenadiers a 64-54 advantage.
Karly Sweeney followed with four straight points to put IU Southeast ahead 68-54. IU Southeast led 70-61 after three quarters.
With IU Southeast leading 71-61, Midway scored four straight points to make it 71-65. After a
Linzie Wernert layup, Midway hit a three to cut the Grenadier lead to five.
Makenna Wilson hit a jumper to make it 75-68, but Midway hit another three to cut the IU Southeast edge to 75-71.
Karly Sweeney hit two free throws to give IU Southeast a 77-71 lead, and a layup by Sweeney put the Grenadiers ahead 79-71.
Jesse Ledgerwood connected on a free throw to make it 80-71 with 2:10 remaining.
Midway hit a layup to make it 80-73, and after the Eagles forced a turnover, Midway connected on a three to make it 80-76.
Karly Sweeney connected on a pair of free throws to make it 82-76 IU Southeast.
A layup by Midway cut the Grenadier lead to 82-78 with 58 seconds left. A free throw by
Linzie Wernert made it 83-78 with 44 seconds remaining. Midway drew a foul and connected on one of two free throws to cut the IU Southeast lead to four at 83-79.
Katie Durbin gave IU Southeast an 84-79 lead with a made free throw. After a missed Midway shot,
Katie Durbin grabbed the defensive rebound to secure an 84-79 win.
Linzie Wernert recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Katie Durbin had 12 points and two blocks.
Leah Miller flirted with a triple double, scoring 12 points while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals.
Karly Sweeney had 10 points, and
Lexi Starr had nine.
IU Southeast returns to action on Saturday for Senior Day against Miami-Middletown.
