IU Southeast Sweeps Doubleheader Against SMWC on Monday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept St. Mary-of-the-Woods in a doubleheader on Monday, winning game one 5-1 and game two 9-8 in 10 innings.
 
IU Southeast scored first in game one. McKenzie Walters led off the bottom of the first with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Josie Lemmons reached base on a bunt and stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Autumn Oehlstrom followed with a two-RBI double to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead.
 
After an Erin Templeman double, Macie Zink hit a sacrifice fly to give IU Southeast a 3-0 lead. Brynlea Bennett followed with an RBI triple to make it 4-0 and would score on a wild pitch to put IU Southeast ahead 5-0.
 
IU Southeast loaded the bases with one out in the second, but SMWC induced a foul out and a groundout to get out of the jam.
 
SMWC threatened in the top of the fifth. SMWC had runners on first and second with no outs. After two fielder's choices, the Pomeroys had two runners on with two outs. An attempted steal of third netted SMWC a run when the throw got away. SMWC put runners on second and third with two outs, but Madison Wathen got a strikeout to get IU Southeast out of the jam leading 5-1.
 
Neither team would score for the rest of the game as IU Southeast secured a 5-1 win.
 
Madison Wathen threw a complete game, allowing just two hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work. Wathen struck out nine batters in the victory.
 
Brynlea Bennett had two hits for IU Southeast, including a triple. Autumn Oehlstrom and Erin Templeman each doubled in the win. Josie Lemmons had two stolen bases for IU Southeast.
 
SMWC scored first in game two. After a leadoff walk in the top of the second, an error put runners on first and second with no outs. An RBI single gave the Pomeroys a 1-0 lead.
 
IU Southeast answered in the bottom of the second. Macie Zink singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Maci Warner followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
 
SMWC led off the top of the third with a double. After a groundout advanced the runner to third, an RBI single gave the Pomeroys a 2-1 lead. Three straight singles gave SMWC a 3-1 edge. With the bases loaded, a hit by pitch put the Pomeroys ahead 4-1.
 
Cassi Roman doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After two walks loaded the bases, a walk to Savannah Gaither cut the SMWC lead to two at 4-2. Another bases loaded walk, this time to Autumn Oehlstrom, made it 4-3.
 
SMWC scored a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to take a 5-3 lead.
 
After Macie Zink was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the fifth, Brynlea Bennett tripled to drive in Zink and make it 5-4. Maci Warner followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5.
 
A single and an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed SMWC to score a run and take a 6-5 lead.
 
Autumn Oehlstrom walked, and Erin Templeman singled to put runners on first and second for IU Southeast in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice bunt by Macie Zink advanced the runners to second and third, and Brynlea Bennett followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
 
Maci Warner delivered another sacrifice fly to give IU Southeast a 7-6 lead. A Cassi Roman double down the right field line put the Grenadiers ahead 8-6.
 
SMWC opened the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles. An error allowed a run to score to make it 8-7. A flyout advanced the runners to second and third with one out. A squeeze bunt scored a run to tie the game at 8-8. Maci Warner induced back-to-back groundouts to end the inning and keep the score tied.
 
IU Southeast didn't score in the seventh, and the game went to extra innings. Neither team had a runner in scoring position in the eighth. SMWC had a runner on second with two outs in the top of the ninth, but a flyout sent the game to the bottom half of the inning. IU Southeast went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to the tenth.
 
SMWC opened the top of the tenth with a single and a sacrifice bunt. The Pomeroys attempted to score a run on a single up the middle, but a throw from center field by Katie Templeman nabbed the runner at the plate to keep the game tied. A groundout to the pitcher sent the game to the bottom of the tenth.
 
Erin Templeman doubled to open the bottom of the tenth, and Macie Zink followed with a walk-off double to give IU Southeast a 9-8 win in 10 innings.
 
Maci Warner got the win, throwing all 10 innings for IU Southeast. Cassi Roman led IU Southeast with four hits, including two doubles. Erin Templeman, Macie Zink and Brynlea Bennett each had two hits. McKenzie Walters, Josie Lemmons and Brynlea Bennett each stole a base in the win.
 
IU Southeast (10-9, 4-0 RSC) returns to action on Tuesday for a road doubleheader at Brescia.
