GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated Georgetown College 5-2 on Tuesday.
Georgetown struck first in the bottom of the second. After a walk and an error, an RBI single gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
IU Southeast threatened in the top of the fifth.
Logan Murphy doubled, and
Brayden Hazelwood singled to put runners on first and second with one out, but a fielder's choice and a groundout got Georgetown out of the jam.
Mason White led off the top of the sixth with a single and advanced to third on a
Luke Powell double. Georgetown threw White out at the plate on a fielder's choice by
Kody Putnam for the first out of the inning, but Powell would come around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
With Putnam on third,
Slater Schield delivered an RBI groundout to give IU Southeast a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Georgetown put a runner on second with one out. An RBI double to left field brought home a run to tie the game at 2-2. With one out and a runner at third, the Tigers hit a flyball to left field, but
Colin Long threw the runner out at home to preserve a 2-2 tie.
Mason White led off the top of the eighth with a single through the left side.
Luke Powell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice,
Slater Schield was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
Max Flock delivered a sacrifice fly to score Powell to give IU Southeast a 3-2 lead.
The top of the ninth saw the Grenadiers use back-to-back singles by
Brayden Hazelwood and
Colin Long to put runners on the corners with no outs. An RBI single by
Grant Shepherd gave IU Southeast a 4-2 lead. With one out,
Luke Powell delivered an RBI groundout to extend the Grenadier lead to 5-2.
IU Southeast would go on to secure a 5-2 victory.
Cade Reynolds got the start for IU Southeast, allowing one run on two hits in four innings of work.
Kacey Cheek and
Jackson Grissom followed with a pair of scoreless innings.
Garrett Hill picked up the win after throwing the seventh and eighth, and
Luke Powell got the save after throwing a scoreless ninth.
Mason White,
Brayden Hazelwood and
Colin Long each had two hits in the win. Four different Grenadiers drove in a run.
IU Southeast (15-12) returns to action on Friday to begin a three-game set on the road against Midway.
