10-Run Fourth Inning Sends IU Southeast Past Midway 13-1

MIDWAY, Ky. – A 10-run fourth inning and a strong outing from starter Luke Schafer propelled IU Southeast to a 13-1 win over Midway in the series opener on Friday.
 
The Grenadiers had the bases loaded with two outs in the third inning but could not drive the runs in.
 
That changed in the fourth inning. Three-straight singles by Ethan Burdette, Max Flock and Logan Murphy drove in the game's first run as Murphy knocked in Burdette.
 
After back-to-back errors by the pitcher on sacrifice bunts tacked on a pair of runs, Slater Schield reached base on a fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed Brayden Hazelwood to score.
 
Luke Powell drove in a pair with a double to left-center and a RBI single by Burdette drove in Powell to extend the lead to 7-0.
 
A two-run double by Flock followed and another RBI double by Murphy capped the rally.
 
The Grenadiers scored 10 runs on seven hits, there were four errors in the inning.
 
In the fifth, Mason White led off with a single and stole second. He scored on a RBI single by Powell.
 
After consecutive strikeouts, a wild pitch moved Putnam and Powell to second and third and another double by Murphy extended the lead to 13-0.
 
Luke Schafer retired the first six batters he faced and only one runner got to second in the first five innings. He struck out six of his nine batters in the front five innings.
 
He got the complete game win, allowing one run on three hits, he walked a pair and struck out nine.
 
Logan Murphy was 3-for-4 with five RBI in the win. Luke Powell, Kody Putnam, Ethan Burdette and Max Flock all had two hits and scored twice. Luke Powell drove in three and Flock knocked in two.
 
The series concludes with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
