NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team overcame deficits of 5-1 and 7-3 to defeat Brescia 9-7 on Friday.
With the Grenadiers trailing 3-0,
Colin Long singled to drive in
Ethan Burdette and get the Grenadiers on the board.
IU Southeast chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, an RBI double by
Trevor Goodwin scored
Brayden Hazelwood and
Luke Powell hit a solo home run in the fifth, his second of the season.
The Bearcats answered with a pair of runs in the sixth, when a wild pitch and a RBI single by Johnny Foti helped extend the lead.
Max Flock got the runs back with a two-run home run to right, his sixth of the season. After
Logan Murphy was hit by a pitch and
Trevor Goodwin singled, Long executed a perfect bunt into the infield grass around first base and reached on a single as the defense could not make a play and Hazelwood scored.
Mason White put the Grenadiers in front with a two-run single to center and he advanced to second on the throw. A RBI single by
Kody Putnam extended the Grenadier lead to 9-7 to cap off the six-run inning.
Brendan Koester allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out batter to earn his second win.
Gavin Knust worked two perfect innings once the Grenadiers had the lead and shut down the Bearcat offense while striking out a pair.
Kacey Cheek worked the ninth for his second save, allowing one hit but getting a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Trevor Goodwin was 3-for-3 with a RBI.
Mason White was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and
Colin Long had two hits and drove in two.
IU Southeast concludes the series with Brescia with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
