RIO GRANDE, Ohio. –
Autumn Oehlstrom launched career home run number 20 to set the IU Southeast softball career home run record as the Grenadiers split a doubleheader with Rio Grande on Friday.
Game one started as a pitcher's duel as the first 11 batters of the game were retired. Rio Grande loaded the bases with two outs, but a
Madison Wathen strikeout got IU Southeast out of the jam.
An infield single and a stolen base by
Josie Lemmons gave IU Southeast a runner on second with no outs to open the top of the fourth. Lemmons came around to score on a throwing error to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth,
Cassi Roman connected on a solo home run to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 until the seventh.
Brynlea Bennett led off the top of the seventh with a double. A
Cassi Roman RBI single made it 3-0 IU Southeast.
Issy Wright drew a walk, and after a flyout,
Josie Lemmons walked to load the bases with two outs.
Autumn Oehlstrom followed with a grand slam to give IU Southeast a 7-0 edge.
IU Southeast would go on to secure a 7-0 win.
Madison Wathen threw a complete game two-hit shutout for IU Southeast, striking out 10 in the win.
Cassi Roman had two hits and two RBIs, and
Autumn Oehlstrom drove in four with the grand slam.
Josie Lemmons stole two bases and
Grace Stapleton stole a base as well.
Rio Grande jumped out in front in game two. A one-out double followed by a single and an error in the bottom of the first gave the RedStorm a 1-0 lead. Rio Grande added two more in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
A two-RBI single by Rio Grande in the bottom of the third gave the RedStorm a 5-0 lead.
Back-to-back doubles by
Autumn Oehlstrom and
Erin Templeman got the Grenadiers on the board in the top of the fourth, but Rio Grande answered with a run of their own to take a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Kendall Brown led off the top of the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kaitlyn Leister.
Issy Wright came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 6-2.
In the top of the sixth,
Autumn Oehlstrom drew a one-out walk.
Erin Templeman followed with a single to put runners on first and second. After the runners advanced to second and third, pinch-hitter
Savannah Gaither delivered a two-RBI single to cut the Rio Grande lead to two at 6-4.
Rio Grande answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.
Issy Wright led off the top of the seventh with a walk.
Hannah Nunemaker followed with an infield single to give IU Southeast runners on first and second.
Brynlea Bennett followed with an RBI single to make it 9-5.
Autumn Oehlstrom followed with another RBI single to make it 9-6.
Rio Grande made a pitching change and retired the next three Grenadiers to secure a 9-6 win.
Hallie Foley threw 1.2 innings for IU Southeast, allowing three runs (two unearned) on four hits.
Maci Warner threw 4.1 innings in relief.
Autumn Oehlstrom and
Erin Templeman each had two hits in the contest.
Savannah Gaither led IU Southeast with two RBIs.
IU Southeast (18-11, 12-2 RSC) returns to action for a doubleheader at WVU Tech on Saturday.
