NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Taylor on Monday, falling in game one 1-0 and game two 2-1.
IU Southeast had
Josie Lemmons on second with one out in the bottom of the first, but Taylor was able to strand Lemmons to keep the game scoreless after one inning.
Taylor put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the second, but IU Southeast starting pitcher
Madison Wathen got out of the jam after a flyout and a strikeout.
Taylor threatened in the top of the third. A walk and an error put runners on first and second with no outs, but
Madison Wathen struck out three batters to end the Taylor rally.
In the top of the fourth, a leadoff walk and a wild pitch gave the Trojans a runner on second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put a runner on third with one out, and a single up the middle gave Taylor a 1-0 lead.
Taylor had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fifth, but a popout and a lineout got IU Southeast out of the jam. A walk and a single gave IU Southeast runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning, but a fielder's choice ended the Grenadier threat.
Only one batter reached base for the rest of the game as Taylor secured a 1-0 win.
Madison Wathen threw a complete game for IU Southeast, giving up one run on six hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters.
Josie Lemmons had two of the four IU Southeast hits and a stolen base in the contest.
Game two saw Taylor get on the board in the first. A double and two singles gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a 1-2-3 inning for IU Southeast, Taylor put a runner on third in the second inning, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Taylor used back-to-back singles to give them runners on first and second in the third, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.
Kaitlyn Leister doubled to leadoff the bottom of the second for IU Southeast, but a strikeout and two groundouts stranded Leister in scoring position.
Neither team had a base runner in the fourth or fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, a solo home run gave Taylor a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Maci Warner reached first on an infield single to leadoff the inning. Pinch runner
Josie Lemmons stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Lemmons scored on a
Macie Zink groundout, but Taylor would go on to win 2-1.
Maci Warner threw a complete game for IU Southeast, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out six. The Grenadiers had just two hits in the contest, a double by
Kaitlyn Leister and an infield single by
Maci Warner.
IU Southeast returns to action for a home doubleheader against IUPUC on Friday.
