ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, winning game one 6-0 and dropping game two 10-1 in five innings.
SMWC led off the bottom of the first with a double, but IU Southeast starting pitcher
Madison Wathen struck out three straight batters to get out of the jam.
IU Southeast was able to put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the third, but SMWC escaped the jam with a strikeout.
Autumn Oehlstrom doubled to open the top of the fourth for IU Southeast.
Macie Zink singled with one out, but SMWC threw out the go-ahead run at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
In the top of the fifth,
Madison Wathen led off with a single. After a fielder's choice,
Issy Wright was hit by a pitch and
Savannah Gaither drew a walk to load the bases.
Brynlea Bennett was then hit by a pitch, which forced in a run to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
Autumn Oehlstrom followed with a bases-clearing double to give IU Southeast a 4-0 edge.
In the top of the seventh,
Brynlea Bennett was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Autumn Oehlstrom followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0 IU Southeast.
Macie Zink delivered an RBI double to extend the IU Southeast lead to 6-0.
The Grenadiers would go on to clinch a 6-0 win.
Madison Wathen threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out a career-high 16.
Autumn Oehlstrom went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs in the win.
Macie Zink had two hits, including a double.
Kendall Brown stole two bases, and
Cassi Roman swiped a bag as well.
In the bottom of the first of game two, the Pomeroys scored two runs to take a quick 2-0 lead.
IU Southeast loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second. A sacrifice fly by
Issy Wright cut the SMWC lead to 2-1.
SMWC added two runs in the bottom of the second, four runs in the third, and two runs in the fourth to take a 10-1 lead.
The Pomeroys would go on to secure a 10-1 win in five innings.
Emma Davis started and threw the first two innings for IU Southeast.
Hannah Nunemaker threw two innings in relief.
IU Southeast only had four hits in game two.
Autumn Oehlstrom doubled, and
Issy Wright drove in the lone run for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast (25-12, 19-3 RSC) returns to action on Tuesday for a home doubleheader against Midway.
