COLUMBUS, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept IUPUC in a doubleheader on Wednesday, taking game one 16-0 in five innings and game two 7-6.
IU Southeast scored in the top of the first of game one. After
Brynlea Bennett reached on a misplay by the catcher,
Autumn Oehlstrom delivered an RBI double to give IU Southeast a quick 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second,
Kendall Brown led off with a single. With Brown on second and two outs,
Issy Wright came through with an RBI single to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 lead.
Autumn Oehlstrom led off the top of the third with a single and
Erin Templeman followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-0 IU Southeast. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Savannah Gaither launched a pinch-hit grand slam to make it 8-0 Grenadiers.
Brynlea Bennett followed with a walk and
Autumn Oehlstrom singled to put runners on first and second. RBI singles by
Erin Templeman and
Macie Zink made it 10-0 IU Southeast. After
Kendall Brown reached on an error,
Madison Wathen roped a bases-clearing double into the gap to give the Grenadiers a 13-0 edge.
Issy Wright singled to open the top of the fourth for IU Southeast. With one out,
Brynlea Bennett hit a two-run home run to give the Grenadiers a 15-0 lead.
Kendall Brown tripled to lead off the top of the fifth and came around to score on an RBI groundout by
Cassi Roman to make the score 16-0 IU Southeast.
The final score was 16-0 IU Southeast in five innings.
Madison Wathen threw a five-inning no hitter in the win, striking out seven.
Autumn Oehlstrom went 4 for 4 in the contest.
Erin Templeman,
Macie Zink,
Kendall Brown, and
Issy Wright each had two hits apiece.
Savannah Gaither drove in four runs, and both
Erin Templeman and
Madison Wathen drove in three.
In the bottom of the first inning in game two, a solo home run gave IUPUC a 1-0 lead.
After an
Issy Wright single in the top of the third,
Brynlea Bennett delivered an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.
IUPUC answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
With one out and runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, a
Savannah Gaither sacrifice fly cut the IUPUC lead to 3-2.
Cassi Roman followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
IUPUC scored a run on an error in the bottom of the fourth to swing the lead back in their favor at 4-3.
A two-out, two-run home run by
Erin Templeman in the top of the fifth gave IU Southeast their first lead at 5-4.
In the top of the sixth,
Cassi Roman connected on a two-run home run to extend the IU Southeast lead to 7-4.
IUPUC scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Grenadier lead to 7-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, IUPUC loaded the bases with one out, but a line drive double play secured a 7-6 victory for IU Southeast.
Hallie Foley got the start for IU Southeast, throwing five total innings in the contest.
Maci Warner came in and threw two innings in relief.
Brynlea Bennett,
Erin Templeman, and
Cassi Roman each had two hits in the win. Roman led the Grenadiers with three RBIs.
IU Southeast (28-13, 22-4 RSC) returns to action for a home doubleheader against Brescia on Friday.
