NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated IUPUC 9-1 in the series opener on Friday.
IU Southeast jumped on the board first.
Kody Putnam led off the bottom of the second with a double and advanced to third on an infield single by
Logan Murphy. After pinch runner
Alex Yurt stole second, a sacrifice fly by
Colin Long made it 1-0 IU Southeast. An RBI double by
Trevor Goodwin and an RBI single by
Slater Schield gave IU Southeast a 3-0 lead.
Colin Long singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
Trevor Goodwin followed with an RBI triple to give IU Southeast a 4-0 lead. A
Slater Schield RBI single made it 5-0 Grenadiers.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh,
Slater Schield singled to right field. An
Ethan Burdette RBI double made it 6-0 IU Southeast, and
Mason White followed with a two-run home run to give IU Southeast an 8-0 lead. After a pitching change,
Luke Powell launched a solo home run to make it 9-0 Grenadiers.
IUPUC scored a run in the top of the eighth, but IU Southeast would go on to secure a 9-1 win.
Luke Schafer threw seven scoreless innings for IU Southeast, allowing just two hits while striking out nine.
Oscar Welsh pitched the eighth, and
Zach Gutermuth threw a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
Slater Schield led IU Southeast with three hits and two RBIs.
Mason White and
Trevor Goodwin each had two hits and two RBIs in the win.
IU Southeast (26-15, 18-4 RSC) hosts IUPUC for a doubleheader on Saturday. Senior Day festivities will be held pregame at approximately 11:15 AM.
