NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team concluded conference play with a Senior Day sweep of IU Columbus 12-2 and 10-1 on Saturday.
In game one, the Crimson Pride struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first but the Grenadiers took the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the second inning.
Colin Long continued his hot hitting when he cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right to tie the game. Then a double by senior
Brayden Hazelwood scored Long to put IU Southeast in front.
Two bunt singles and a base hit loaded the bases in the fourth and senior
Slater Schield followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead.
Alex Yurt drove in Long on fielder's choice to extend the lead to 5-2.
In the sixth, back-to-back RBI singles by
Mason White and
Luke Powell scored Schield and Yurt.
IU Southeast put the game away with a three-run seventh inning. After
Logan Murphy walked, another senior,
Max Flock, tripled to drive him in. An error scored Flock and a RBI double by senior
Ryan Kassel scored Schield.
The Grenadiers run-ruled IU Columbus by tacking on a pair of runs in the eighth.
Luke Powell walked and
Casey Brown was hit and a groundout moved them into scoring position.
Colin Long came through again when he cleared the bases with a two-run single to end it.
Starter
Tyler Yotkewich worked six innings and gave up two runs on three hits to earn the Senior Day victory in his final regular-season start. He walked one and struck out four.
Senior relievers
Brendan Koester and
Gavin Knust worked scoreless innings and each struck out a batter.
Max Flock and
Colin Long each had three hits and Long drove in four in the win.
In game two, IU Southeast jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
Logan Murphy singled to score
Kody Putnam, who had reached on a walk to score the game's first run.
A sacrifice fly by Schield with the bases loaded drove in Flcok and a two-run triple by Long doubled the lead and drove in
Trevor Goodwin and Hazelwood.
Another four-run inning in the fourth inning blew the game open for IU Southeast.
Logan Murphy led off with a single and Goodwin followed with a two-run home run down the right-field line.
After Long doubled, he moved to third on
Mason White's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Powell.
Kody Putnam drove in White with a RBI single.
Konnor Schiedt capped off the game with a two-run double in the sixth inning. He drove in
Ethan Burdette, who had singled and Hazelwood who had reached on an error.
Senior
Kacey Cheek started and worked two innings for the Grenadiers. He was followed by fellow senior
Conner Fries who worked a perfect inning for his third win.
Fellow seniors
Cade Reynolds and
Garrett Hill each worked an inning to nail down the win.
Cade Reynolds worked a 1-2-3 inning and Hill struck out the side.
Ethan Burdette had three hits and scored once while Long had two hits and drove in two and
Logan Murphy had two hits.
With the sweep, IU Southeast wins the RSC West Division and will host RSC East Division winner in best of three series next weekend to determine the No. 1 overall seed in the RSC Baseball Championship.
