NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team fell 6-3 in both games of a doubleheader to Point Park on Thursday.
Point Park scored first in game one. A leadoff single, a stolen base, and a wild pitch in the top of the first gave the Pioneers a runner on third with no outs. A sacrifice fly gave Point Park a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second,
Kody Putnam led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Ethan Burdette followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth. Two singles and a wild pitch gave Point Park runners on second and third with two outs. An errant throw on a pickoff attempt allowed the Pioneers to take a 2-1 lead.
Point Park added four runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Luke Powell and
Ethan Burdette had RBI singles. IU Southeast had the tying run at the plate, but Point Park would get out of the jam to secure a 6-3 win.
Luke Schafer allowed three earned runs in eight innings while striking out 13.
Garrett Hill and
Oscar Welsh combined to finish the ninth inning.
Logan Murphy had two hits, and
Ethan Burdette drove in two runs.
IU Southeast scored first in game two.
Ethan Burdette singled and advanced to third on a
Logan Murphy double to give the Grenadiers runners on second and third with one out.
Max Flock followed with an RBI single to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by
Trevor Goodwin gave the Grenadiers a 2-0 edge.
Point Park answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, a two-out RBI double by
Mason White brought the Grenadiers within a run at 4-3.
An RBI single in the seventh gave Point Park a 5-3 lead. A solo home run extended the Pioneers edge to 6-3, which would go on to be the final score.
Connor Sims got the start and threw 3.2 innings.
Kacey Cheek threw three innings in relief, and
Cade Reynolds followed with 2.1 innings.
Six different Grenadiers had a hit.
Mason White and
Logan Murphy doubled. White also stole a base.
IU Southeast (29-17) returns to action in the RSC Conference Tournament which begins next Thursday.
