CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated Rio Grande 17-7 in seven innings to open the River States Conference Baseball Tournament.
IU Southeast scored in the opening inning.
Colin Long walked, and
Mason White and
Luke Powell singled to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. With one out,
Trevor Goodwin hit a grand slam to give IU Southeast a 4-0 lead.
The Grenadiers loaded the bases once more in the bottom of the third.
Max Flock came through with a two-RBI single to give IU Southeast a 6-0 edge. An RBI single by
Slater Schield made it 7-0 IU Southeast.
Colin Long followed with an RBI double to make it 8-0 Grenadiers.
Rio Grande used an RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 8-1.
An RBI single by
Trevor Goodwin in the bottom of the fourth made it 9-1 IU Southeast. After a double and a walk loaded the bases,
Slater Schield delivered a two-out bases-clearing triple to give IU Southeast a 12-1 lead. A
Colin Long RBI single made it 13-1 Grenadiers.
Rio Grande scored two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 13-3.
Logan Murphy connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 15-3.
A three-run home run by Rio Grande in the sixth made it 15-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back doubles by
Colin Long and
Mason White gave IU Southeast a 16-6 lead. A sacrifice fly by
Ethan Burdette later in the inning made it 17-6 Grenadiers.
Rio Grande scored a run in the seventh, but IU Southeast would go on to secure a 17-7 win in seven innings.
Tyler Yotkewich got the start and the win for IU Southeast, throwing six innings.
Zak Rasener threw the seventh inning to close the game.
Colin Long led IU Southeast with three hits.
Trevor Goodwin drove in five runs, and
Slater Schield drove in four.
IU Southeast (30-17) returns to action on Friday at 4:00 PM against Shawnee State.
