MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with Midway on Saturday, winning game one 6-3 and dropping game two 6-2.
Game one remained scoreless until the top of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by
Josie Lemmons and
McKenzie Walters gave IU Southeast runners on first and third with no outs.
Savannah Gaither followed with an RBI groundout to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead.
Midway hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
Issy Wright led off the top of the fifth with a double. After two straight outs,
Josie Lemmons walked, and
McKenzie Walters was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Savannah Gaither followed with a bases-clearing double to put the Grenadiers ahead 4-2.
Midway scored a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Grenadier lead to 4-3.
A
Josie Lemmons single and a
McKenzie Walters double gave IU Southeast runners on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh.
Savannah Gaither followed with an RBI single to give IU Southeast a 5-3 lead.
Lillian Mackey put IU Southeast ahead 6-3 with a sacrifice fly.
IU Southeast would go on to win 6-3.
Madison Wathen started and struck out nine batters in three innings of work.
Issy Wright got the win, throwing the final four innings.
Savannah Gaither led IU Southeast with two hits and five RBIs.
Josie Lemmons and
McKenzie Walters each had two hits apiece. Lemmons, Gaither,
Quinlynn Cunningham, and
Chloee Shewmaker each stole a base.
IU Southeast scored first in game two.
Chloee Shewmaker led off the top of the second with a single and advanced to second on an error. A throwing error allowed IU Southeast to put runners on first and third with no outs. A sacrifice fly by
Alaina Winzeler gave the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. A double steal allowed
Kaitlyn Leister to score to make it 2-0 IU Southeast.
A sacrifice fly by Midway in the fourth cut the IU Southeast lead to 2-1. An RBI single in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 2-2.
A two-out error in the bottom of the sixth paved the way for Midway to score four runs and take a 6-2 lead, which would go on to be the final score.
Hallie Foley started and allowed one run in four innings.
Hannah Nunemaker threw two innings in relief.
Six different Grenadiers had a hit.
Alaina Winzeler stole two bases, and
Kaitlyn Leister and
Cassie Walls each stole a base as well.
IU Southeast finishes the regular season 33-14 overall and 27-5 in conference play. They return to action on Thursday in the RSC Conference Tournament.
